Blue vervain is a perennial native flower that is part of the mint family and  has a long history of medicinal use in the indigenous community.

It's botanical name is Verbena hastata and is one of the cornerstone of pollinator plants and seed sources in Ontario ecological system. It is a host plant for several species of bees, butterflies, and moths. Birds eat its seeds during the fall and winter.

Blue vervain has delightful purple/blue spikes that work well as a cut flower and brings unique colour to your garden for 6 weeks. I personally use it to bring vertical interest to bouquets and have vase tested it to last at least two weeks.

Indigenous peoples used it medicinally several ways, including for stomach aches, fever, headaches, and arthritis. While still in use for some herbologists, I would recommend extensive research and consultation with medical professionals before using any parts medicinally as there is not sufficient scientific proof about its efficacy.

To grow, choose a sunny spot that gets plenty of moisture and sprinkle the seeds in fall. Winter will provide cold stratification to break seed dormancy. If you do not want the plant to spread, remove flower heads after they are spent.

Please be aware that as a member of the mint family, it can spread.
